A BIT ABOUT US:

Inspired by Project Semicolon, a movement that began in the United States, YEG Mental Health was formed in July 2015 as The Edmonton Mental Health Awareness Committee (EMHAC). The founders wanted to host a fundraising event for mental health awareness that would also give an opportunity to people living with mental illness to obtain a semicolon tattoo.

A semicolon can represent when an author could have chosen to end their sentence; but instead carried on. This message and the symbolic tattoo not only resonated with many who battle mental illness and thoughts of suicide, those that love and support them also appreciate the meaning behind this movement. This birthed the #YEGSEMICOLON Tattoo Event, and in just seven weeks the committee produced a quality event raising over $20,000 for Momentum Walk-In Counselling.

Inspired by the impact we made on the community, we chose to continue working together towards the common goal of spreading awareness with helping educate and by raising funds for organizations that were improving the lives of people living with mental illness. Through an amazing network of volunteers and supporters from the community, YEG Mental Health (formerly EMHAC) went on to produce a second, larger #YEGSEMICOLON Tattoo Event in May 2016. This time over $40,000 was raised for Momentum Walk-In Counselling.

We were excited to discover that our events were helping to increase awareness of mental health and reduce stigma surrounding mental illness, and our events were proving to be excellent opportunities to promote social inclusion and the sense of community.

YEG Mental Health made the decision to apply for Society status in July 2016 and the application was approved.

YEG Mental Health’s executive committee draws upon individuals from a wide spectrum of careers and skills, including individuals with lived experience. Volunteers are also an integral part of helping during our events, and we are grateful to each one.

As we continue to evolve as an organization, our role is constantly changing, but we remain true to our mission statement which is:

To raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding mental illness by helping educate and produce events that promote inclusion, diversity, hope and inspiration for those living with and loving someone with mental illness, while also raising funds for underfunded mental health programs.

We believe in partnering with and supporting our fellow advocates and organizations for the greater good of improving the lives of people living with mental illness. We strive to find opportunities to promote activities that will engage the community and increase participation for all.

We do see YEG Mental Health (EMHAC)’s role potentially evolving into also palying a strong role in helping our government partners implement their mental health strategies.

Why support YEG Mental Health?

1 in 5 people will be affected by Mental Illness in their lifetime.

Approximately 80,000 people across Canada have lost their lives to mental illness.

Suicide is the leading cause of non-accidental death of youth in this country.

Alberta has 500 deaths a year by suicide.

YEG Mental Health (formerly EMHAC) is a Society established in July 2015 to raise awareness of mental health and reduce stigma surrounding mental illness.

We do this by helping educate and by producing events that promote inclusion, diversity, hope and inspiration for those living with and loving someone with mental illness.

Composed completely of volunteers, to date we have raised over $66,000 for local non-profits. We rely solely on the generosity of sponsors, donations and gifts in kind to do the work we do. Our signature event is #YEGSEMICOLON, a celebration and inspirational day of bringing people together and connect them with the support they need, all achieved in a fun and exciting environment.

Many that have come to our events say that for the first time, they felt “accepted”.

Our community needs you.
